Interpretation space

My research has taken me to Canterbury on a bus man’s holiday (it is a Bank Holiday after all). What might it mean that the interpretation of the site as designated on the World Heritage List is set into the pavement rather than on the more noticeable interpretation boards? As a modern pilgrim, of sorts, I enjoyed the symbolism of the status of the place being inscribed on the roads we walk on, but how many people will see them I don’t know.
